Everything you need to know about low profile roof top tent mounting solutions
A roof top tent is only as good as what it's bolted to. Every low profile mount we make, by vehicle, plus what to check before you buy.
Low Profile Roof Top Tent Mounts: What They Are, Why They Matter and Which One Fits Your 4WD
A roof top tent is only as good as whatever it's bolted to. Plenty of people buy the tent first, then discover their roof setup is either too tall for the garage, too noisy at 100km/h, or built around a platform rack that adds a hand's width of height before the tent even goes on.
A low profile roof top tent mount takes a different approach: it sits close to the factory roofline, gives the tent a solid, level base, and keeps the vehicle looking like the vehicle it is. This guide covers why that matters, what to check before you buy, and every low profile mount in our range, split by vehicle with photos, specs and direct links to each one.
Why Go Low Profile?
- Lower centre of gravity — every centimetre the tent sits closer to the roof is weight carried lower on the vehicle, which helps stability on side-slopes and corners
- Less wind resistance and noise — a rack that hugs the roofline presents less of a barrier to the air than a tall platform rack
- Garage and car park friendly — adding only around 50mm to the roof height (on the mounts where we've published that figure) is very different to adding a full platform rack's worth
- Keeps the factory look — a clean, integrated profile instead of a bulky rack sitting on top of the vehicle
- Protects your paint — the roof mounts in this range include protective pinchweld and paint protection film (PPF) strips so the roof stays untouched during installation and long-term use
What to Check Before You Buy
- Your vehicle's roof load rating — this is the number that governs everything. Our stance is that the mount is rated to the vehicle's roof load limit, so the tent, its hardware and anything else on the roof need to stay within what your vehicle's manufacturer allows. Check your owner's manual and your tent's published weight before ordering.
- Rail spacing — your tent's mounting system needs to line up with the rails. On the GU Patrol mount, for example, the rails sit 570mm centre to centre, which suits most roof top tent mounting systems.
- Exact model and year range — roofs differ between generations, so confirm the fitment on the product page for your specific vehicle rather than assuming a mount from an adjacent model will work.
- Awning plans — if you want a side awning as well, check for a matching awning mount up front so you're not retrofitting brackets later.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a low profile roof top tent mount?
It's a roof mounting system that sits close to the factory roofline to carry a rooftop tent or gear, instead of a tall platform rack. On the mounts where we publish the figure, it adds only around 50mm to the vehicle's height.
How much weight can it carry?
Our stance is that the mount is rated to the vehicle's roof load limit, so the vehicle's own roof rating is the number that matters. Check your owner's manual and your tent's weight, including its mounting hardware, before you buy.
Will it fit my rooftop tent?
The GU Patrol mount has 570mm rail spacing centre to centre, which suits most roof top tent mounting systems. Check the product page for your vehicle and compare against your tent's mounting dimensions.
Will it damage my paint?
The roof mounts include protective pinchweld and paint protection film strips, so the roof stays protected during installation and long-term use.
Can I add a side awning?
Yes — we make matching 2 pack awning mounts for the Prado 150 and GU Patrol low profile mounts. They're designed to work only with those mounts; for platform racks, see the Roof Rack Mounts collection.
I drive a ute — what are my options?
The PopRack Low Profile Tub Rack is our answer for the Next-Gen Ranger, Raptor and Ranger Super Duty, mounting over the tub instead of on the cab roof.
My vehicle isn't listed. Do you make one?
The range grows regularly, so check the Low Profile Roof Top Tent Mount collection for the current list, or email sales@piratecampco.com.au to ask about upcoming fitments.
Pick the Mount Before the Tent
Work out your vehicle's roof load limit first, then choose a tent that sits comfortably inside it, then choose a mount that matches both. Starting from the mount avoids the most common mistake: buying a heavy tent a roof was never meant to carry.
